CASTING ENGINEERING CAREERS IN A NEW LIGHT

Studying isn’t for everyone and there is every opportunity out there to do
more, be more and be paid for it whilst ‘learning on the job’ and Miah is a classic example of this pathway.

After GCSE’s at Sir James Smith’s School in Camelford, Miah progressed to A-levels in English Language and a BTEC Level 3 in Health and Social care at BodminCollege. It was at this point that she recognised that a move further up the ‘career highway’ into the fast lane of University wasn’t for her.

“There was so much pressure to go to uni, from my tutors, my friends and it was tough; a horrible time of too much pressure to feel like you had to do the right thing, to please everyone else.”

I wanted to complete an apprenticeship and had to do a lot of research to find the right course – there simply wasn’t enough information out there to guide you. The focus by academic institutions to get you to university is intense and over shadows the brilliance of apprenticeships.”

Fortunately, Miah saw an advert by Daften Die-casting for a Business Administrator role, supported by a Level 2 Business Administration course at Truro College. “This was everything I was looking for – a real job with real prospects and apprenticeship support.”

One year later she has completed her Level 2, is mastering Level 3, conquering additional excel courses and thriving in a business environment in one of Cornwall’s leading manufacturing firms.

Miah concludes: “I’m not very confident but my time here has given me a new confidence and I urge everyone who questions going to uni to listen to yourself, don’t feel pressured, stick to your guns and discover a whole world of apprenticeship opportunities.”
